Longer summer evenings are here

IF you wake up feeling an hour older this morning -- don't fret.

For the first time, most Australians will be feeling the same.

Tasmanians wound their clocks forward an hour at 2am today, marking the start of the summer daylight saving period.

They were joined by their counterparts in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.

Tasmania has long started its daylight saving period before other states, but today marks the start of a somewhat uniform national approach.

Queensland and the Northern Territory have never adopted daylight saving, while West Australians will put their clocks forward on October 26.

Tasmania was the first Australian state to introduce daylight saving, in 1967.

With water supplies well down that year because of a harsh drought, the State Government introduced the time-changing program in a bid to reduce hydro-energy consumption.

In 2005, then-prime minister John Howard pushed the other states to adopt Tasmania's longer six-month daylight-saving period.

At the time Mr Howard said it was a great pity the south-eastern states had different time zones for a month.

"I think NSW and Victoria should start a month earlier. I think Tasmania is showing the lead," Mr Howard said in 2005.

Tasmania's daylight saving period will end on Sunday, April 5.
