Second Tas swine flu death

A 77-YEAR-OLD woman from the North-West Coast has become the second person to die from swine flu in Tasmania.

The woman, who was suffering from a number of other chronic conditions, died at the North West Regional Hospital yesterday.

North West Area Health Service Dr Gershu Paul said that although influenza was not the primary cause of the womans death, it may have been a contributing factor.

Both Dr Paul and the Acting Director of Public Health, Dr Chrissie Pickin, said they wanted to pass on their sincere condolences to the patients family and friends.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to them and will not be releasing further detail publicly to ensure their privacy is protected at this difficult time."Dr Pickin said she again wanted to reiterate that for most Tasmanians the H1N1 Influenza virus will be mild and can be managed at home.

"However we have always said that there will be some people who become seriously unwell," Dr Picken said.

"People in this category will most likely be those with underlying health conditions as was the case in this situation.

"People most at risk of severe illness include pregnant woman, those with underlying conditions such as lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, renal disease, liver disease, significant obesity or immune system suppression.

"We urge people in these categories who also become ill with flu like symptoms (fever and cough and/or sore throat) to seek medical attention early.

Health Minister Lara Giddings also offered her condolences to the patients family.

"Unfortunately this highlights the difficult time Tasmania faces in the coming weeks as the expected peak in human swine flu affects the community," Ms Giddings said.

"I urge all Tasmanians to continue to heed the advice of our health authorities, particularly those who are most at risk," Ms Giddings said.

Health officials have again reminded all Tasmanians to cover their mouths when they cough, wash their hands regularly, stand a distance away from others and stay at home if unwell.

Parents are also urged to keep their children away from school if they have flu-like symptoms.
