Staff at the University of Tasmania have stopped work for the day, causing some classes to be cancelled.
Last week members of the Tertiary Education Union voted to strike for 24 hours as part of an ongoing dispute with the university.
The union says the university has stalled negotiations on key issues such as job security, use of casual staff and introducing a new pay agreement.
Kelvin Michael from the union says university staff have been without a pay agreement for 12 months.
"In the period that we've been negotiating, we've really gone nowhere," he said.
"We have no agreed clauses on the table, and we've become frustrated with the lack of progress, and the lack of engagement that we're experiencing."
