The Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa – Subclass 475/487

The Tasmanian government has temporarily closed SS/SRS sponsorship operations from 17 March 2009 due to a policy review. This suspension period is now extended till 4 May 2009.  New applications will not be processed during this period. The unit will resume the programs with an updated policy on 4 May 2009.

·  Existing applications as of 17 March 2009 will be assessed against the updated policy guidelines after 4 May 2009.

·  Only applications with a job offer or strong existing link to Tasmania (i.e. relative/family living in the state and/or studied in Tasmania for more than two years) may be assessed and approved before 4 May 2009.

If you possess skills, experience and personal qualities which can contribute to our economy Economic Development and Tourism invites you to consider migrating to Tasmania under the Skilled Regional Sponsored (SRS) visa scheme.

IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship's (DIAC) website contains information on the SRS visa program. Click here for the Subclass 475 Provisional visa, or click here for the Subclass 487 Provisional visa.

The SRS visa does not offer immediate permanent residency but a three-year provisional visa.  Once you and your dependants have resided in Tasmania for at least two years under the SRS visa and you have been employed (or self employed) full time for a cumulative period of 12 months during that time, you can apply for permanent residence under the Skilled - Regional visa scheme (subclass 887).

For more information, please visit Department of Immigration and Citizenship's website:
http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/g ... ation/887/index.htm

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR TASMANIAN SRS SPONSORSHIP
Please be aware that meeting the following requirements does not guarantee state sponsorship.  Applications will be assessed on your demonstrated ability to settle and secure skilled employment easily in Tasmania.  Economic Development and Tourism reserves the right to modify conditions/requirements of sponsorship without notice subject to labour market changes and economic conditions. Please also be aware that state sponsorship does not guarantee DIAC will issue a visa.

Application Criteria differ between applicants applying for the subclass 475 (offshore SRS) or the subclass 487 (onshore SRS) visa.

If you are applying for Tasmanian SRS (subclass 475) sponsorship you must:

score at least 90 points (excluding 10 points for State sponsorship) in the Australian Government’s skilled migration points test;

have a positive skills assessment from a recognised Australian assessing authority, and:

- your occupation is on the Tasmanian SRS occupations list and you meet any specialisations/requirements applicable to your occupation; or

- you have a full time, skilled job offer in your nominated occupation of at least 3 months from a Tasmanian employer; or
- you recently graduated from a Tasmanian educational institution and returned to your home country but are still eligible for DIAC’s “work experience exemption” based on the recent two year full time study.

Subclass 487 (former overseas students)

If you are applying for Tasmanian SRS (subclass 487) sponsorship from inside Australia as a former overseas student you must be:

a new graduate of a Tasmanian educational institution; or

a new graduate of an Australian educational institution with a skilled, full time job offer of at least three months from a Tasmanian employer;

(Note: If you require a skilled job offer, you may want to consider applying for a Skilled Graduate visa (subclass 485). The 485 visa may make it easier for you to apply for skilled work in Tasmania in order to become eligible to apply for Tasmanian SRS sponsorship.)

Subclass 487 (working holiday makers or occupational trainees)

CONCESSIONAL ENGLISH
‘Concessional Competent English’ - an average band score of at least 5.5 based on all four components in the IELTS test - is only available to new graduates who studied in Tasmania and meet all other sponsorship criteria.

Concessional English for offshore tradespeople ceased to be offered in November 2008. All applications under review at this time are affected by the change.
Note: New graduates who cannot provide IELTS results (due to the backlog at IELTS test centres) may request a conditional sponsorship based on sound academic performance (i.e. average mark of 60 or higher). Such applicants must inform Economic Development and Tourism of IELTS results when obtained.
