11 August 2011

This is the second day of our self drive journey. Cumbria, where the Lake District is, was occupied by the Romans for about 350 years until AD406 and thus there are many Roman ruins, mostly forts, in the area. After visiting the Roman ruins, our next destination was the Isle of Skye. We headed north to Scotland and stayed a night in Fort William.

Ravenglass Railway, which is acclaimed to offer the most beautiful train journey in England

Walking up the slope to the Hardknott Roman Fort, which was a challenge to my niece. So, Mark had to hold her hand and walk with her.

The Hardknott Roman Fort, what are left are mainly the abutments

The northern part of England and Scotland have many old or ruined castles. This is the Penrith Castle.

The famous hairy coo in Scotland. Getting close to the hairy coo was also a challenge to my niece as she is scared of furry animals. After much encouragement, she was trying to make some contact.

Fort William. We had fish and chips there for dinner. Thanks to the long day light in European summer, this photo was taken at about 9pm.
