THE Tasmanian University Union has condemned an attack on a female student in a Sandy Bay street last night.
The 22-year-old woman was walking home at 10.30pm when she turned from Regent St into Princes St and was accosted by three men.
Indicating he had a knife, one then grabbed her by the wrist and demanded her wallet.
Detective Inspector Peter Powell said a struggle ensued between the woman and the trio and she was punched in the face.
"She eventually broke free and ran to a friend's address nearby and contacted police," he said this morning.
"She suffered minor bruising and swelling to the face but was otherwise unharmed."
The men did not get her wallet.
TUU state president Saleh O Bintalib said the union was "deeply concerned" by the attack happening near the UTAS campus.
"We will be raising our concerns with our partners so that an incident such as this can be avoided in the future,'' he said.
The first male is described as being in his mid-20s, 182cm tall, with a fair complexion, slim muscular build and neat, short blonde hair with a goatee beard.
The second male is of similar appearance with no facial hair.
The third attacker is also in his mid-20s, slightly stockier than the other two, with a dark complexion, dark, shaved hair and was wearing large, white skate shoes.
