Salamanca Square will come alive this weekend with the Chinese New Year celebrations. Hobart’s Chinese Community has joined forces with community groups to present the first Chinese New Year Lantern Festival in the square, which will be filled with more than a thousand colourful lanterns and the sounds of music, singing and dancing. The Lantern Festival starts on Friday evening at 7pm and finishes on Sunday with a family day between 10am-4pm. All the performances would include Chinese artists from around the state and the rare and amazing face mask changing. Other entertainment includes a Chinese rock band, Chinese opera, calligraphy, tea ceremonies, fireworks and lion dancing. Event coordinator Tony Hope, from the Salamanca Square Incorporated said the Lantern Festival was a tremendous cooperative effort, with many organisations combining to celebrate a major event on the Chinese calendar. “The festival is proudly supported by Salamanca Square Incorporated, UTAS, the Tasmania Chinese Business Association, Hobart City Council and the Mercury. There is also much support from the local Chinese community, especially the Chinese Buddhist Academy and UTAS International Students Society,” Mr Hope said. People intending to eat at the Lantern Festival should book early at their favourite restaurant in the square. Valentine’s Day on Friday will heighten its popularity, Mr Hope said.
