Glenorchy car theft capital

GLENORCHY is Tasmania's most popular suburb for car thieves, says insurer AAMI.

AAMI executive manager Anthony Matthews said the 2008 study found that 10 of the top 15 suburbs for car theft were in Hobart's northern and eastern suburbs.

Glenorchy has a claims theft incidence rate of 0.6 claims per 100 policies compared with second placegetter Austins Ferry with 0.5.

Mr Matthews said the study also showed that 60 per cent of drivers considered additional security features when they bought their last car.

"One in nine Tasmanian drivers [11 per cent] has reported their car being broken into and slightly fewer [2 per cent] have reported their car stolen."

He said that 4 per cent of drivers had reported that people had attempted to enter their car while they were in it.

"This frightening experience underscores the importance of locking your car when you are in it," he said.

"Of Tasmanian drivers who have had their car stolen, more than one quarter had it stolen from their driveway [29 per cent] or residential street [25 per cent] and 10 per cent from a public carpark."

The study found that nearly one in three drivers left valuables visible when they parked their car.

"Thieves find loose items like cash, MP3 players and sunglasses attractive because they are quick and easy to grab and easy to conceal," he said.

"Cash and spare change [23 per cent], MP3 players, CD players and radios [14 per cent], sunglasses and clothing [17 per cent] and tapes and CDs [6 per cent] are the most popular items for thieves."

Nearly one in 10 Tasmanian drivers have had their car vandalised, with badge theft, tyre slashing, paint scratching or damage from supermarket trolleys being common.

Mr Matthews said half of Tasmanian drivers had an engine immobiliser and 30 per cent had a car alarm.

About 84 per cent of drivers regularly lock their car.

"Thieves are very opportunistic and will strike when least expected so drivers should always lock their cars," he said.

"Use secure, off-street parking when available and always park in a well-lit area at night, even if it means walking a bit further."
