UTAS ranks among best

THE University of Tasmania has again been ranked among Australia's best.

And this is particularly so for enrolling indigenous students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The university continues to be a magnet for international students, who are attracted by its solid teaching reputation and Tasmania's relatively low cost of living.

On the downside, UTAS graduates find it harder to get jobs outside the areas of medicine and pharmacology.

Tasmanian graduates also earn less when they begin working, except in the field of medicine, which has a starting salary of almost $62,000 a year.

The 2010 Good University Guide rates UTAS in the top 20 per cent of Australia's 38 universities.

The guide used six indicators to rate universities -- access and equity, cultural diversity, entry flexibility, getting a job, graduate starting salaries, indigenous participation, research grants, research intensivity, student demand, TAFE credit and teaching quality.

UTAS scored five out of five stars for access and equity and indigenous participation and was ranked in the top three in terms of enrolling students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

It received four stars for its performance in university entry, research grants, research intensivity, student demand, TAFE credit and teaching.

The recent murder of a Chinese student may have hit Hobart's international reputation as a safe place to study.

But the guide says UTAS should still be a magnet for overseas students next year, particularly from China, the Middle East and the US.

University guide ratings manager Richard Evered said: "The big numbers of international students come from China and they tend to study computing and business. Significant numbers from the Middle East take engineering courses. The surprise was the number of overseas students coming to UTAS from the US to take science courses."

UTAS vice-chancellor Daryl Le Grew said the university ranked well in terms of teaching and research and it was inclusive and welcoming.

Professor Le Grew said Tasmanians should be proud the state had university that attracted national and overseas students.
